Lasagna is a dish that almost everyone loves and there are hundreds of ways to prepare it. You can use traditional Italian ingredients such as mozzarella cheese, tomato sauce and ground beef or sausage, or be creative and prepare it Mexican style with tortilla shells, queso fresco and chili. Your sauce can be tomato based or a white sauce. White sauces lend themselves quite well to vegetable and seafood lasagnas. The variations are endless and limited only by what is in your cupboard or refrigerator.

Not only is lasagna delicious, but it can be a very nutritious choice. You can substitute high fat cheeses with lower fat choices. Ricotta is a cheese that is low in fat and is a wonderful addition to any lasagna recipe. If you dont like the texture of ricotta, you can try cottage cheese which will give you a more creamy texture without sacrificing flavor. Try wild game lasagna made with wild mushrooms and a rich brown sauce for a hunters delight. Chicken and seafood also widen your meat varieties along with many different sauces and cheese choices.

If you are trying to cut down on your meat consumption, why not try veggie lasagna? Roasted eggplants and portabella mushrooms are reminiscent of meat but have none of the fat or cholesterol worries. A variety of roasted peppers makes a zesty lasagna when paired with either a tomato or bchamel sauce. Any fresh vegetable out of the garden that is roasted can be used as a filling for lasagna.

White pasta is not your only choice; there are many types of pasta available. You can choose whole wheat pasta or vegetable flavored pasta for extra taste and nutrition. If you are preparing Mexican lasagna, flour or corn tortillas make a great choice. Even left over noodles and macaroni arranged between layers of fillings can be fashioned into a lasagna. Thinly sliced potatoes in a white sauce with your choice of cheese and meat make a delicious dish and an alternative to pasta.

Use fresh or frozen fruit with puff pastry to make delicious dessert lasagna. Slice apples and layer with crushed cookies and a yogurt and honey sauce for a tasty fall treat. You can also use whipped cream in the layers and sprinkle with powdered sugar for decoration and sweetness. Shaved chocolate or caramel sauce adds an extra special touch that will impress your family and friends. Your imagination is your only limit when you create lasagna. - 24553
