Why Being Skinny Isn't The End All Be All To Health And Fitness

The media portrays images of people that are extremely skinny. But what the media doesn't reveal is that many of these images have been digitally altered.

Even worse, many people may actually believe that this is the path to health.

So here are some factors to consider:

1. Fat can be stored around your organs and inside of your arteries: You see, fat doesn't just get stored under your skin. So you could be really thin, but have a large amount of fat in you arteries. In fact, I have seen many case studies of thin people undergoing heart surgery.

2. Muscle loss: As you age your body will naturally start to lose muscle mass. This is a result of aging, but it isn't unavoidable. You see, by lifting weights you can prevent this from happening. So make sure you don't fall for the non-muscle skinny look.

3. Brittle bones: Fractures, especially hip fractures are very common in elderly people. Now a lot of these fractures can be avoided if you have more dense bones. And the best way to boost bone density is with resistance training.

4. Metabolic slow down: Your metabolism will naturally slow down as you age. This is just the way the human body works. However, you can reverse this trend by exercising on a regular basis, especially if you lift weights.

5. Better endocrine function: A skinny person will have a worse endocrine profile versus someone that is constantly exercising. And your endocrine system, which is in charge of producing hormones, will keep you much younger.

6. Altered joint mechanics: Not having enough muscle mass will put your joints more at risk. You see, muscle protects your joints by surrounding them with mechanical support. Thus, if you are too thin and don't have enough muscle mass, your joints are more at risk.

There is nothing wrong with being skinny as long as you use exercise to achieve the look. Just make sure you don't use diet alone! - 24553
