When people hear Western food, they automatically think of Texas and cowboys. Not always so. Western food is a term generally referred to the food in Europe and Western nations, including Australia, which has one of the most diverse customs in the world. When it comes to the culinary scene, Australia is very multicultural, bearing Western food and other influences.

Western cuisine in Australia is very prevalent. As most in the nation's account is founded on traditional British food brought by the first British colonists, one can find steaks, hams, and more prevalent in the culinary scene.

A typical breakfast in Australia is similar to breakfasts taken in many Western countries. Light breakfast usually includes cereals, fruits, and toast. Likewise, a heavier breakfast is very identical to a full English breakfast of eggs, sausage, hash browns and bacon. Drinks taken may include tea, coffee, milk or juice.

Lunch and dinner in Down Under is in general very Western-like. Although dishes differ according to the household's background, common choices include roast meat, pasta, pizza, casseroles, vegetables, and barbecue. Considered outback food includes steaks, grilled rib-eye, and lamb chops among others.

Just like other Western nations, Australia also has a wide assortment of take-away foods. Fish and chips, which is also associated with other countries, such as U.S. and England, is a favorite takeout food. Burgers, sausage rolls and meat pies are also popular take-away food picks.

Also common in Down Under are American fast food chains, such as Pizza Hut, KFC, McDonald's, and Subway.

There are also lots of foods that while viewed Western, are still very much an Australian icon. These include the favorite breakfast product Vegemite, a salty spread applied to bread; ANZAC biscuits and pavlova cake, although New Zealand also lay claims to these ones; meat pies; and kangaroo meat.

As Australia, a previous British colony, is greatly shaped by its first British settlers back in the days, Western food in the country is pretty predominant. It is able to keep its native taste and iconic foods even though its culinary scene is shaped by its settlers of different roots.
